Who is this mad man, and why is he sitting on the Supreme Court?

The violence, intimidation and subterfuge that led Congress to pass Section 5 [of the 1965 Federal Voting Rights Act] and this court to uphold it no longer remains.

-Justice Clarence Thomas in Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District Number One v. Gonzales

Say WHAT? I don’t usually like to point out where, in a racially-charged issue, a person of the affected race said something strange, but this really takes the cake. Thomas is the only Black man on the Supreme Court, an august, deliberative, well-read and knowledgeable body (laughing yet?). You’d think that if anyone was going to say that minorities are no longer harassed, lied to and intimidated concerning the ballot box, it wouldn’t be the Black man on the court. What universe does this man live in?

Well, I guess I should cut him some slack. He probably didn’t know that such conditions still exist because he never bothered to ask.

I’m sorry, Thomas is black? I love Republican blacks, they are whiter than I am.
